Gurn Group is a software artist interested in matter and memory. Assemblage-based game development integrating video footage, free 3D assets, and emulated software ('plunderludics'). Gurn Group's work has been exhibited at Babycastles, LIKELIKE, and Boshi's Place.
april 29 2024 (Perfect Dark with superimposed scrolling text) was developed using a technique called 'software sampling' / 'plunderludics', the process of making new work from existing video game software. In this work, scrolling text is superimposed over an emulated and modified version of the Nintendo 64 game, Perfect Dark (Rare, 2000). As the game is played, the work tracks the player’s vertical position in emulated memory and uses this value to modify the vertical scroll of the text.
Through adding superimposed scrolling text, Gurn Group creates a tense juxtaposition between the high-stakes action of Perfect Dark and a personal narrative about their own relationship with Perfect Dark. Through this, Gurn complicates the traditional objectives of play: moving fast and efficiently may yield to a higher score, but skips large portions of the added narrative. Players using the in-game elevator, instead of the stairs, will be unable to read important paragraphs of the added text. Instead of enforcing the Perfect Dark's preestablished feedback loop, Gurn asks players to quickly multi-task between two very different styles of play.
